Gaming, teens and the “cool” librarian

The new game in my life is Fallout 3.

If you’re not familiar with the game, it’s a bleak, dystopian look at life after The Bomb and how people survive without an overarching governmental structure. This storyline is right up my alley.

So, earlier this week I was talking to a young patron about playing video games. He was looking for a strategy guide for Fallout 3. We recently had a bunch of strategy guides and Xbox games donated, so I was able to say that we were getting the guide cataloged. Then, giant nerd that I am, I asked if he was playing it yet. When he answered in the negative, I started gushing about how great the game is.

After I sang the praises of Fallout 3, I realized that I might have made a teen realize that librarians might have more going on in their lives than just books. As I was growing up, I was startled to learn that my teachers, Mr. Bushman and Ms. Mannick, got married after a year’s sabbatical. What a concept – teachers with families! Maybe by talking about Fallout 3 and being somewhat knowledgeable about video games, I was able to convince the teen that librarians know about more than just literary criticism and other academic pursuits.  That we like to have fun and have lives, too.

A Quick Note…

Right now, this site is under construction. BUT: my vitae is up, so take a look there, if you like!

I’m hoping to get more blogging done as I go along…
